Cultural understanding refers to the knowledge and information as well as acceptance of cultural norms and values of other ethnic groups and communities. Cultural understanding is an aspect that can shape a new and a better future of a nation. Through cultural understanding the harmony and peace of the country is maintained. Cultural understanding strengthens the cultural unity and diversity of a nation. For Example: If people of Newar ethnic community in Nepal respect and cherish the values of Rai community then it creates a sense of understanding and mutual cooperation between those communities.

Cultural understanding portrays a role of unity in diversity and mutual respect. The communities are bounded by the territorial boundaries of a community. So the communities should learn to respect the other ethnic groups within the boundary and even beyond it. If cultural understanding is maintained then it can prevent the possible outcome of genocide and other mass murders. We know discrimination gives rise to violence. The history has already showed the mass murder of a Somalian Community due to cultural discrimination. We respect the cultural identity of each and every community and believe that they have their own individual identity and existence. But fights and wars in the name of culture, cast, creed and color are some of the heinous crimes in the world an this should be prevented and the head of the respective communities should make it their utmost priority. In this way harmony and amity can be achieved. If we cherish and celebrate different festivals of other communities then they reciprocate in the same manner.

Cultural understanding not only brings unity and racial harmony among the ethnic communities but also the nation itself. If there will be ethnic harmony and understanding between the communities then it prevents battles and wars and hatred between people of different communities. This maintains peace in the country and brings a feeling of respect and nationality. Sustainable peace among the communities is a prerequisite to sustainable development.
